PADI and National Geographic Pristine Seas need the help from all PADI Dive Centers and Resorts in creating the first-ever global economic analysis of the diving industry.

Your participation will provide invaluable information that will become part of a study that can be used to influence and inspire local and national governments to create marine protected areas, protect endangered and vulnerable marine species, and accelerate coral reef recovery.

You have the power to protect the global ocean and your participation is critical.

The dive industry economic evaluation survey has power to help protect 30% of the world ocean. Your participation will provide valuable data that can be used to:

Our Plan

We can heal and protect the underwater world for now and generations to come. Together with National Geographic Pristine Seas, we will work with local governments to protect and conserve valuable marine ecosystems. As PADI Mission Hubs, PADI Dive Centers play an invaluable role in the success of this world-changing project.

Step 1

Using data from all PADI dive centers globally, a study will be produced of the economic benefits of diving around the world. This analysis is intended to provide a strong economic argument for governments to support the creation of MPAs and a sector that can create jobs and produce important economic output locally.

Step 2

Utilizing the economic evaluation data derived from the survey, National Geographic Pristine Seas and PADI will create resources that PADI Dive Centers can use to advocate for the protection of their dive sites.

Step 3

The invaluable information gathered through participation in the survey will be an integral component of the study that will be used to influence and inspire local and national governments to protect marine environments.

National Geographic Pristine Seas is an exploration, research and media project founded and led by National Geographic Explorer in Residence Enric Sala. The Pristine Seas team is comprised of determined scientists, policy experts and filmmakers who work to inspire the creation of protected areas where marine life can thrive—while ensuring effective management for years to come. Pristine Seas has helped to inspire the creation of 24 marine reserves, an area totaling over 6.5M square kilometers. Learn more at nationalgeographic.org/pristineseas.

Participation in research is entirely voluntary and you may choose to withdraw at any time until the data are published. By completing this questionnaire you are giving consent to participate in this research, please answer all questions as honestly as possible. The results of with study will be shared with National Geographic Society and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). This analysis will be used to inform governments how the creation of MPAs can create jobs and produce important economic outputs locally.

All individual responses are confidential. The survey is managed by a group of researchers at UC San Diego and the University of British Columbia working to understand the benefits of scuba diving and snorkeling to the global economy and ocean conservation.

The survey consists of 47 questions and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
