The vast fringing reef shelf provides over two dozen dive sites featuring a large and intricate underwater shelf comprised of shallower inshore sites great for beginners and a drop-off on the northern side suitable for more advanced divers. The reefs are close to shore which require a short boat ride, and depths range from 30 to130+ feet (10-40+ meters). Notable reef dives in the area include Ochi wall, Coral Garden Wall, Devil’s reef, The Mountains/Top of Mountains and many more. The lively reef attracts marine life including rays, reef fish, sponges, soft and hard corals, turtles, nurse sharks and more. Katherine Shipwreck is a wreck dive featuring a former minesweeper used by the Canadian Navy during World War II. Night diving is also a possibility on several dive spots including Dickies Reef where nocturnal animals including octopus and squid have been sighted.
Visitors can travel to Ochos Rios year-round considering water temperatures range from 80F/26C to 86F/30C and air temperatures range from 75F/23C to 88F/31C throughout the year. The rainy season occurs from July to October concurrent with hurricane season in the summer. Rain showers are often short-lived due to the proximity to the coastline, but can offer a cool down during the hotter months of the year. Despite the rainy season, there are still plenty of warm sunny days in the summer, but rainy weather can negatively impact visibility. The dry season ranges from December to April which are also peak season for Jamaica.
