Site Entry/Exit
Beach: easy entrance into the water, with this area its more sand than anything starting off and then turns to silt. depth is rather slow to increase but turns to silt near the middle of the wharf area.
Points of interest/natural navigation aids:
There are typically lots of lobsters during the warmer months and fish as well. As this is a working fishing wharf you'll find typical fishing items around the site (gloves, fishing hooks, bottles, tires etc...). There is typically lots of life around the wharf ranging from cunner to the various seasonal fish Nova Scotia has to offer (check out our marine section of the website.)
Bottom Composition & Depth:
From the Jetty entry point you'll find sand/rocks/minor kelp, growth on the rocks etc, going straight out you'll find mostly sand/silt once you reach near the end of the jetty you'll be around 25ft/7.6m of water which you can contiue straight out to get depth but its a long swim . From the beach area it starts off as sand and turns to silt near the centre of this protected cove.
Depth can range from 5ft/1.5m to 60ft/18.3m and can easily get 80ft/24.8m plus
Visibility:
Visibility varies based on many influences including the weather - rain runoff, wind and waves - the tides and the time of the day. Improved visibility may be experienced during slack high tide. Visibility of 30ft to 40ft/9m to 12m is not uncommon for this site.
Hazards:
Boat traffic can be the number one hazard here, if there's fisherman around may not hurt to let them know your out diving around this site, they may ask you to have a dive float with you.
Beware that there may be nets in this area, always carry a knife with you
Other fishing gear such a fishing lines, fish hooks, mooring lines and traps. If you find a trap float something on the trap and the fisherman have been know to bring them up.
If your doing site clean ups please be careful with rigging lift bags and do not bring items up that are too heavy for your life bag. If your interested in the project aware dive against debris specialty let us know and we'd love to teach the course and pass on our safety procedures.
Current and tide please be aware there may be a mild current at this site.
