Ilha da Queimada Grande is an island located approximately 20km offshore. Its name can be roughly translated to "Great Blaze" and the story goes it was given due to the bonfires fishermen would light to keep the many venomous snakes native to the island away. The region is now an official reserve and stepping into its shores is now forbidden and also considerably dangerous as the local snakes “jararaca-ilhoa” are still lurking in the island.
The dive however is a very pleasant one as the spot is commonly protected from winds and very rarely presents any waves. Apart from the very vast marine life you will find consisting of many fish species, turtles, rays and occasional goliath groupers you will get the chance to dive an approximately 110 metre long ship wreck, the “Tocantins” that was beached du to bad weather conditions, fortunately taking not lives at all but still packed with good stories that your guide will most certainly tell you during your surface intervals.
